Favorites of This Month

Helloo. How's everything? Here are some stuffs I enjoyed this month. No spoiler has been given. So if you want, you can try some of them and enjoy all the surprises they have in stock.

Books

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

A Spanish young man goes in search of treasure after encountering a mysterious man. The journey isn't easy at all. But as he moves forward, he keeps learning about the mystic truth of world and life itself.

The Alchemist is one of the most inspiring books I've ever read. It talks about following your dream, what obstacles come in its path, why they come and how to prevent them. The story is certainly not about the destination but about the journey. Each and every sentence of the book hits right into realization and makes you wonder how you knew all these stuffs all along but didn't realize them in the same way. The following quote of the Alchemist fits this feeling the most-

"I only invoked what you already knew."

বিবর্ণ তুষার - Muhammed Zafar Iqbal

The Story revolves around some Bangladeshi immigrants in America and the timeline is not much after 1971. Reader is exposed to snippets of the characters' life story and an important part of the story has indirect presence of the Independence War and deals with patriotism. Bought this book randomly online and enjoyed a book of Zafar Iqbal after a looong time.

Frankenstein - Mary Shelley

Not writing the synopsis since we all know more or less about what this story is about.

I actually took it as a sad, tragic story more than a horror one. Also, I was taken aback to find out Frankenstein was the scientist's name, not the monster's (Should I call it monster? 'A scientific mishap' sounds better). Ha...my whole life was a lie -.-

Movies and drama

Kiki's Delivery Service

13 y/o girl Kiki steps out to live on her on at a new city as part of her training as a witch. In the process, she faces problems, stumbles and learns and finds her way on her own.

I loved this Ghibli movie because the way Kiki finds solution to her problems is so satisfying to watch and inspiring. I could see a part of my dream being portrayed on the screen while going along with Kiki's journey of being an individual one.

আমাদের সমাজ বিজ্ঞান

No synopsis is needed. It's your life :D (more or less, if you are a part of a typical Bangladeshi family). The success of this telefilm is that it depicts the contemporary problems the youth face today, just as they are. While its message is directed more towards the exploiting elders, I believe the young people, too, has a lesson to take away and that is- bearing with the agony without speaking up only deteriorates the end result, it's no form of respect in any way.

K-Drama

Mr. Queen

After a series of events, Jang Bong-hwan finds himself trapped in a woman's body in Joseon era of 200 years ago. To make things worse, the woman has to marry the king the next day. While he tries hard to escape from this mess, things get complicated in the palace.

I started watching this drama cuz I had heard it was funny but I never expected it to have such a good story. The balance between humor and serious storyline is so amazing, I didn't feel bored to watch any of the 20 episodes. Great acting skill of Shin Hye-sun (the queen) and Kim Jung-hyun (the king) gave it a whole new level.

Crash Landing on You

A successful business woman and heiress of a big company, Yoon Se-ri flies into North Korea from the South accidentally while paragliding. There she comes across an army officer and a love story begins with an uncertain future.

The story was great but at times I felt that viewers were being forced to feel a certain way. Romance got too sweet now and then too. Other than that, everything was good. I loved the side couple more than the main one :')

Bing-goo

After staying frozen in ice for 37 years, Go Man-soo comes back to life in 2017. He still looks in his twenties while all his contemporaries have grown old. He looks for his love knowing nothing is the same as before.

Waking up from being frozen for 37 years is such a ridiculous idea but the story that follows is good. Nicely depicted in only 2 episodes. I think Kim Jung-hyun's acting contributed most to this drama's being a good one.

An Excerpt from My Karate Journey!

One of the new things that has been added to my life this year is Karate. I had always been interested in learning some kind of martial art, so finally starting to learn karate was like a dream-come-true to me. Recently I've been promoted to yellow belt from white (belt ranking starts from white and gradually climbes up to yellow, orange, green etc.). Today I'd like to share with you some thoughts regarding my karate journey. First, let me tell you about our karate dojo (where karate is taught). Honestly, I've never been to a place full of so much positive energy before. No negativity, only hard work and learning. I think it's wonderful that we willingly keep coming to the place which keeps giving us tough time every week. I doubt even 1% of this willingness is present when it comes to going to school. Another different thing about this place is– here age doesn't make you junior or senior, your skill does. Often we learn from someone who is much younger than us and

How the Nuclear Tests Destroyed the Lives of Innocent Islanders

Bikini Atoll The other day I was reading the story 'othoi shagor' of 'Tin goyenda' again after almost 8 years and learned about an interesting historical reference which I had completely ignored the first time I read it. Today I'm sharing that with you. After World War 2, during the cold war between the United States and Russia, the U.S.A. conducted some consecutive nuclear tests on different islands and atolls in the Marshall islands (the testing sites were given the name– Pacific Proving Grounds). These tests continued  for 12 years starting from 1946, to show the world how much power they had. According to the document, 105 nuclear tests were conducted in total. The first explosion took place at Bikini Atoll on 1July, 1946. (Atolls are ring-shaped coral islands.) Marshall Islands is situated in the South Sea of Pacific Ocean and it consists of many small islands and atolls. The atolls consist of smaller islands. In the mainland of the Bikini atoll, lived 167

Arab Spring pt. 1

After slacking on a weekly post, I'm back on the track with new content! This time's topic is a history that's not completely part of the past yet. You've got the spoiler in the title already; it's the hot topic of the beginning of last decade- the Arab Spring. There's much to get into regarding this topic and so I intend to make two (or more if needed) parts of today's post. Here's the part one where I'll be covering what Arab Spring is, how it began and a glimpse of what it led to.  It all started from a small country in North Africa- Tunisia; a country having a long history of corruption and oppression from the government. In the cover of farce-like democracy, the country actually ran by dictatorship under the power of president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia's second president starting from 1987. People didn't have the freedom of speech and government corruption, unemployment, social inequality were distressing their life. Ben Ali's
